The JMTEP-UCD Themes

The JMTEP-UCD project is all about designing and promoting EU-related teaching & learning materials and teaching approaches that make good use of these, particularly for learners with limited understanding of the EU, its institutions, values, and activities. Essentially it focuses on engaging student teachers and teacher educators at one of Ireland’s top teacher education centres in designing, testing and refining what we term Teaching & Learning Packages (TLPs) that double as teacher education and school-centred learning experiences about Europe and being European.

Teaching & Learning Package 1

Green Europe

Green Europe is one of the core themes of the JMTEP-UCD Design Roadmap. It focuses on helping students and teachers explore environmental issues, sustainability, and the EU’s role in addressing climate change. Through this theme, learners are encouraged to think critically about how European policies and everyday actions can contribute to a greener, more sustainable future. The aim is to empower young people to become active participants in building a more environmentally responsible Europe, connecting local actions to global challenges.

Teaching & Learning Package 2

European Active Citizenship

European Active Citizenship encourages learners to understand their rights, responsibilities, and roles within the European Union. This theme explores how individuals and communities can participate in democratic life through voting, civic engagement, dialogue, and advocacy. It empowers students to think about what it means to be an active European citizen and how they can contribute to shaping a fairer, more inclusive, and democratic Europe. The goal is to build confidence, critical awareness, and a sense of agency among young people.

Teaching & Learning Package 3

European Heritage

European Heritage invites learners to explore the rich and diverse cultural history of Europe. This theme encourages students to reflect on how shared and local heritage shapes European identity, values, and connections across borders. By examining historical events, traditions, landmarks, and stories, learners gain a deeper understanding of what unites Europeans while appreciating the continent’s diversity. The aim is to foster respect, curiosity, and a sense of belonging through the lens of cultural heritage.

Design Roadmap

The JMTEP-UCD Design Roadmap is a guide for creating high-quality teaching and learning packages (TLPs) about the European Union. It helps teachers and student teachers plan engaging, meaningful lessons that promote democratic values and active citizenship. The roadmap supports the development of resources focused on three main themes: Green Europe, European Active Citizenship, and European Heritage. Its purpose is to help educators design materials that not only inform but also inspire students to think critically and participate actively in democratic life.

The roadmap includes six key steps: setting clear goals, aligning with key competences (like values, attitudes, skills, and critical thinking), building networks and sharing expertise, designing hands-on and real-world learning activities, creating thoughtful assessments, and finally, publishing materials on the JMTEP-UCD platform. The approach encourages creative collaboration, inquiry-based learning, and open sharing of resources.

The JMTEP-UCD project is about creating interesting, accessible, high-quality EU learning experiences to enrich the European dimensions of teacher education in Ireland and beyond.
