Green Europe is one of the core themes of the JMTEP-UCD Design Roadmap. It focuses on helping students and teachers explore environmental issues, sustainability, and the EU’s role in addressing climate change. Through this theme, learners are encouraged to think critically about how European policies and everyday actions can contribute to a greener, more sustainable future. The aim is to empower young people to become active participants in building a more environmentally responsible Europe, connecting local actions to global challenges.
This unit explores the concept of the Just Transition, a European commitment to ensure that the shift to a green economy is fair, inclusive, and democratic. Through a range of interactive activities, students will investigate how climate action affects different groups in society and how the European Union supports people, communities, and regions through the Green Deal and the Just Transition Mechanism.
Students will engage with real EU policies, explore ethical dilemmas in climate action, and work collaboratively to design a vision for a greener and fairer future.
This unit explores the environmental and social impacts of fast fashion and the European Union’s response to this issue. Students critically examine their own clothing habits, learn about the EU Textile Strategy, and consider sustainable alternatives and individual actions. As part of the “Green Europe” thematic focus, this unit supports students to reflect on their personal fashion choices while engaging with real-world EU efforts toward environmental justice and sustainability.
This unit explores the concept of greenwashing in the context of the circular economy and sustainable consumption. Students will learn how some companies make misleading environmental claims and how to evaluate these critically.
By the end of the unit, students will understand how marketing impacts their buying choices and how EU policies aim to protect consumers from false environmental claims.
The JMTEP-UCD Design Roadmap is a guide for creating high-quality teaching and learning packages (TLPs) about the European Union. It helps teachers and student teachers plan engaging, meaningful lessons that promote democratic values and active citizenship. The roadmap supports the development of resources focused on three main themes: Green Europe, European Active Citizenship, and European Heritage. Its purpose is to help educators design materials that not only inform but also inspire students to think critically and participate actively in democratic life.
The roadmap includes six key steps: setting clear goals, aligning with key competences (like values, attitudes, skills, and critical thinking), building networks and sharing expertise, designing hands-on and real-world learning activities, creating thoughtful assessments, and finally, publishing materials on the JMTEP-UCD platform. The approach encourages creative collaboration, inquiry-based learning, and open sharing of resources.
The JMTEP-UCD project is about creating interesting, accessible, high-quality EU learning experiences to enrich the European dimensions of teacher education in Ireland and beyond.
